Gaza Split Risk Grows as “Yellow Line” Seen Turning Permanent
Nickolay Mladenov, the high representative for Gaza appointed by the United States, stated that the present deadlock in Trump’s peace plan will result in making the “Yellow Line,” which is a line dividing Israeli territory from other territories, into a permanent wall or fence dividing Gaza into two. At present, the Israeli territory is estimated to cover 64 percent of Gaza, while Mladenov suggested that Hamas may continue to exist politically only if it disarms and gives way to a Palestinian transitional authority. Nevertheless, such a suggestion will meet with much opposition as Hamas will not disarm itself when observing the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, and Israel demands Hamas should have “no role” in governance. Moreover, certain factions in Israel call for using military action to disarm the organization.
